Apparently libraries over here are getting revamped to encourage us to use them more. They'll get more computers which I think is good, but also coffee bars and other stuff which makes less sense.
Thinking about why I don't use my local library more two things spring to mind. Firstly I own a number of books I've yet to read, and secondly the library doesn't have many books that excite me. Were I a fan of romance novels I would have a few selves worth to pick from; more if you include the large print versions. But I'm a geek. I read geek books. The computer section in my local library was recently expanded to about a third of a shelf. Most of the books are guides to sending email or using FrontPage and not really things I'll ever chec out. The sci-fi/fantasy section has a whole shelf, but it's usually half empty. I know I can order books from elsewhere but then I have to pay a fee, but with the price of books these days I'd probably rather pay a little extra on the off chance that I'll want a copy anyway. That or I know someone who'll lend me a copy for free.
I guess I just find it a little sad that for all these improvements people don't seem to be thinking about getting more books. I know I'd visit more often if they did.
