I love cooking, yet I don't really get on with recipes. So I've done the only obvious thing I can do, I'm writing a cookbook! I was going to call it Kevin's KookbooK until I realised a) Kook implies a degree of crazy and b)
the capitalisation implies the book may be about White (Flour) Supremacy, so it's currently without title.
So why write a cookbook? Well partly because it's not a book. I love books, the smell of books, the feel of books, but I suspect I'd be useless at writing one. Instead I've started a recipe wiki. Where? That's (semi-)private so tough luck. But I'm warming to the idea more and more every day. The great thing about doing this online is that you can stuff it with really trivial stuff and it doesn't clutter the thing up at all. I'm going to write how to make roast potatoes; I can cook them without thinking but I can write up the recipe so I'm going to do just that! Sure it's pointless but what is the Internet for if not pointless vanity publishing of banal rubbish?
The wiki format is working fairly well for my needs, I'm still exploring and tweaking but I've got some things fairly well sorted now. I'm not sure it's for everyone, we'll see how well it holds up when I let my mum loose on the whole thing. Actually, ironically for a wiki format it's letting other people near it that will ultimately drive me crazy - I've got things working just right and these people are just going to fiddle!
It's a nightmare, people just don't respect data integrity these days. My mum is an imperial woman, she'll get thrown by my obsession with metric. Earlier today I was complaining to a company that they wanted me to put a manufacturer name in the product name, despite there already being a manufacturer's name field I'd used! And the fact that someone was using a non-standard product code to try and game the system. Respect the data people!
And now I've gone completely off on a tangent. How about that? From cooking excitement to abuse of data in a few simple lines. Where can you find that kind of fun these days?
