Oh my. So Formula 1 is off to a new season and it looks like the UK's creepy, stalkerish, love affair with Lewis Hamilton will frustrate me even more. Now last year he was new and exciting, fair enough, but the TV coverage of the British GP was almost exclusively about Lewis and the Ferrari/McLaren "Spygate" affair which had broken that week barely got a mention. Today saw the new season and the various new rules, tracks, drivers, and assorted other developments again took a back seat to Lewis. Yeah, I get it, he's pant ruiningly wonderful, now could we cover the actual sport instead of a single person?
Seriously, we had Lewis on Lewis, Lewis' dad on Lewis (and really, can that guy please get off my screen at least occasionally?), Lewis with a has been Aussie pop star, Lewis with his new teammate, Lewis with a mechanic, Lewis with another mechanic because Lewis is the greatest person ever and he talks to the little people, Lewis' Dad with a minor celeb, the pretty colours of Lewis' car, the weather at Lewis' (former) home in Stevenage, a Vodafone advert starring Lewis, an ident featuring Lewis, a conversaion about Mongolian sheep herding that we manage to mention Lewis in. GAH!
I'm sure he's a really nice guy, I get told it every sodding 5 minutes during every sodding race, but I'm very, very, bored of him now. The word I want is "over-exposed"! I've watched a single F1 race and I've not only had enough of him, I've had too much. I'm one of the few freaks who actually watches the magazine style section before and after races and I don't want them to be about Lewis, I want them to be about F1! Sure, Lewis is a big part of it these days and he'll get more coverage than average, but there are limits to what I can stand. I just want something vaguely in proportion. When there's an incident I want to know about the incident not how the fact that Lewis is miles away will mean another orphan will get fed tonight or something.
Please, a little less Lewis on my screen? And certainly a lot less of Lewis' dad!
