When I think of Great British serial killers certain names spring to mind - Jack the Ripper, the Yorkshire Ripper, Myra Hindley, Harold Shipman, The Black Panther, The Wests. Despite being the most recent and, given the fact that he was only found guilty last week, currently in the press I struggle to tell you that Steve Wright is/was The Suffolk Strangler! In fact I only know the name because I just read a news item on the BBC and I only know The Suffolk Strangler because I just looked the case up. I can recognise his photo, and I know basically what's happening, but basically he's pretty anonymous; in fact I know more about serial killers from before I was born than I do this guy.
Now that may suggest I'm a media heathen who doesn't follow any current events, or it may suggest that as vicious serial killers go this guy was pretty forgetable in my opinion. However the news I just read on the BBC suggests the former, as they describe him as one of Britain's most notorious serial killers
! Wow. I know I'm a big freak living in a world of my own but I do tend to keep a vague eye on the real world and that surprises me. His killings actually took place over 10-11 weeks but the time between the first body being discovered and his arrest was 16 days! During early December when most of the nation were too busy planning their Christmas to be afraid of a kiler in East Anglia taking out prostitutes. Sure, I'm morbid, I paid attention, but how many other people did?
Yet this man who apparently had the nation terrified for years has upset his neighbours. Yes, they wish to change the name of the road to cleanse the area and remove the stigma of his having lived in the street for two whole months. Because there is a risk that London Road will be forever associated with killing prostitues. No, not the London Road near you. Yes I know there are 17, but it's none of them. Or the 865 other London Roads between you and Ipswitch. This is the London Road. We need to change the name before those poor residents need counselling and cash compensation for the ordeal of living in... London Road!
Oh, but don't worry about number 79 where he lived. As local community loudmouth Mrs Hyland says: I don't think the house should be knocked down because it's a lovely building.
Well, he did only live there for 2 months didn't he? Took 3 of his 5 victims back there and possibly killed them there but that's not important, it has lovely windows. Obviously there is a risk that if the house was demolished some fancy new developer type will put something horrid and trendy there, maybe flats, or worse affordable housing. I mean, it's one thing living next to a serial killer but they might put foreigners in there ir something!
