On Sunday we went to see Marcus Brigstocke's "Planet Corduroy" which was one of the best nights out I've ever had. And not just because I'm some sad freak who never goes out either. Carrie Quinlan provided a short warm-up spot which I enjoyed a lot but I think she didn't make much impact because so many people weren't expecting a warm-up act. However when Marcus took the stage I discovered something quite astounding - he is me. Well, a funny version of me anyway.
When the BBC aren't toning him down the guy really does say what I'm thinking - he was standing there saying exactly the same things I say about immigration, terrorism, 4x4s, stretch limos and even Carol Vorderman! I'm such a self-opinionated bastard that I never agree with anyone about anything this much. I'd probably call it creepy but I had way too much fun!
I was almost in tears with laughter. A situation possibly not helped by the fact that I was sitting next to a woman who was expecting a tamer show like he manages on TV and radio. To be fair, so was I (I never realised Marcus had such a bite) but while Marcus was moving closer to my political views he was obviously moving a lot further from hers. As I creased up with every punchline she sat perfectly still and made barely a noise. Her discomfort whenever Marcus turned to a new demographic I'd happily mock just made the jokes funnier. If stand-up can be made funnier it's by sitting right next to the very butt of the joke.
I don't know about anyone else, but that show convinced me I need to live on Planet Corduroy. It has the sanest politics I've ever heard and it's funny as hell. Do yourself a favour and see the show. Then you too will be able to say you've seen the promised land.
