Argie Bargie

personally I think South American football is entertaining; there's usually a lot of passion, a few egos, and some amazing skill all combined to make some amazing football to watch. With that in mind the idea of an Argentina vs Brazil friendly was appealling enough. Then West Ham signed two of the Argentinian team just before the transfer deadline and it became an opportunity to watch these new signings play.

So Argentina lost, and to be honest neither player really set the game on fire. Mascherano was subbed at half-time and Trevez joined him during the second half. But to be fair, for a game with such potential they weren't the only under-whelming aspect, simply the focus of my thoughts for mow.

Trevez looks strangely like caveman, and seems to act a little like one too. The looks like he'll be a bit of a hardman - not so much an outright thug but certainly someone who'll hit back. Disciplinary issues ahoy! He'll go down well at West Ham and I'll be surprised if he doesn't become the name seen on the back of fans' shirts before the year is out.

However I suspect Mascherano will actually make the most difference to West Ham. From what I know of the guy he's a fairly solid midfielder which is always a good area to bulk up. I suspect he'll make a more low-key impact on the squad, earning a few man of the matches but not so many headlines.

However all things considered I think the hype around both players is a bit over the top. It's not even so much about their performances today but a belief that two players can't make a team. Sure, West Ham will be a stronger side if these guys settle but there's no point in pretending this has suddenly made the Hammers a force in Europe or anything. These guys will probably fit in reasonably well since they're young like a lot of the existing squad, but the team would also benefit from some experience. As good as these new players are you still need a good team around them, something I think West Ham can claim these days but the question remains are they good enough?
