I am not a patriot

Sunday saw England celebrating St. George's day. The patron saint of this fair land despite him never actually having ever been anywhere near the place. St. George always seems to get the crowds going though. I heard a lot of people saying that it was their right to celebrate the day, many people refusing to be oppressed and having their precious day taken away from them. All of which I find a little tiresome.

My problem is a simple one, I don't particularly feel English. Sure, I was born here. There are even a number of qualities I tend to regard as English and have been known to appreciate. The problem is, I don't feel I'd be a different person had I been born anywhere else. Cathy spent years of her childhood in both France and Singapore yet in some respects she's more English than I've ever been. Which is just one of the reasons why I regard nationality as rather irrelevant.

I wouldn't fight for this country let alone die for it. Sure, I'd like to think I'd stand up and be counted if these foreign invaders tried to deprive people of civil liberties but as for the country our esteemed leader was born in? This country has been ruled by people from most of Europe at various times in it's history, and in general it's come out the other end in a pretty reasonable state. I don't care where my leader is from, so long as the leader is fair and good.

And of course, I am a heathen from Hell who doesn't have organised religion. Hell, I've not even been baptised so I don't even get to chat with St. Peter on way to a fiery eternity. So I'm possibly not the best person to lecture on Saint's days. Sure, by definition they were nice people, but I just don't quite get it.

So St. George's day completely passes me by. I have no problem with others celebrating it. I wonder why they feel the need to tell me I should care about it, but I won't stop them either. In fact, I've never seen anyone really trying to stop anyone else celebrating it either, which makes me even more puzzled about those who tell me I should celebrate it simply to prove that I can. Maybe one day I'll understand, but I doubt it.
